Miley Cyrus Breaks Up with Liam Hemsworth For Sexting

ADM_PARANOIA_BP_ - 8 August 2013 - West Hollywood, California - Miley Cyrus, Liam Hemsworth. UPDATE: Both Cyrus and Hemswort's reps have confirmed the news exclusively to People: the engagement has officially been called off.
EARLIER: We couldn't usher in the autumn without the traditional breaking up of Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemswoth. The time-honored tradition has become sacrosanct practice in contemporary society, alike in spirit and accountability to the changing of the leaves' colors or the shifting of the nature of television from esteemed drama to subpar comedy. Once again, the rumors are afoot: E! reports from an unnamed source that Cyrus and Hemsworth are splitting after four years (on and off) together.
According to the reports, it was 20-year-old Cyrus who terminated the relationship, having determined Hemsworth, 23, to be guilty of infidelity. Some yet unsubstantiated details point to Hemsworth's involvement in a concord of sexting with Mad Men's own January Jones. Let this be a reminder: Sexting is cheating. The lamest kind of cheating, but cheating nonetheless.
Although the news is only budding now, reports add that Hemsworth was conspicuously absent during Cyrus' performance of "We Can't Stop" at the 2013 Video Music Awards. Granted, this could simply be chalked up to the fact that he had a notion of what she was going to do onstage and decided, instead, to be anywhere else. Oh yeah, and Cyrus stopped following Hemsworth on Twitter over the weekend — which is, like, huge.

Nina Davuluri Crowned Miss America

ATLANTIC CITY, NJ - SEPTEMBER 15: Miss America 2014 contestant Miss New York Nina Davuluri is crowned 2014 Miss America by 2013 Miss America Mallory Hagan during the Miss America Competition at Boardwalk Hall Arena on September 15, 2013 in Atlantic City, New Jersey. (Photo by Donald Kravitz/Getty Images)

Miss New York Nina Davuluri was crowned Miss America at Sunday night's pageant. Davuluri was the first Indian-American woman to be awarded the crown, and one of only a handful of minority winners in nearly 100 contests. While some people continue to be terrible (if you're a glutton for punishment, BussFeed collected a handful of the worst) and were up in arms that a blonde Middle American wasn't elected winner, the judges determined that Davuluri's Bollywood dance and thoughtful response to the question of plastic surgery were enough to give her the crown. Oh, and the fact that she's incredibly beautiful. That probably factored that in as well.
But beyond hateful tweets and messages (seriously, have people always been this awful?), Davuluri has been plagued by a controvery of her own making in the days leading up to the competition. After winning the title of Miss New York, Davuluri celebrated with a few friends in her hotel room, where a "source" for Page Six heard her trash-talking 2013 Miss America and former Miss New York Mallory Hagan. Hopefully she saves some of that smackdown for the haters who will have to learn to live with a Miss America that challenges their limited perspectives on what it means to be American.

Get Ready for Britney’s Zillionth Comeback, It's Going To Be Fierce

Pop queen Britney Spears hit the stage in San Juan, Puerto Rico, for the final show in her Femme Fatale tour just days after her 30th birthday, and gives the fans a show to remember. She also gave a lap dance to Jersey Shore star DJ Pauly D, who has been opening some of the shows in her tour. <P>Pictured: Britney Spears<P><B>Ref: SPL342340 101211 </B><BR/>Picture by: Primerahora.com / Splash News<BR/></P><P><B>Splash News and Pictures</B><BR/>Los Angeles: 310-821-2666<BR/>New York: 212-619-2666<BR/>London: 870-934-2666<BR/>photodesk@splashnews.com<BR/></P>

Britney fans, unite — our leader is back. Britney Spears has been making quite the noise these past couple of days and it's starting to sound like she's ready to claw her way back to the top of musical and celebrity fame. Her new single, "Work Bitch," leaked online this weekend, a couple days ahead of its planned release date and, frankly, it's everything we wanted it to be and more.
And that's not all the Britney news — TMZ has reported that Spears is rumored to take Las Vegas by storm for a two-year stint at Planet Hollywood that is Set to earn her 30$ million. (Does anyone else think that this is actually kind of low and that she deserves way more?)
Spears has had approximately a gazillion comebacks since her peak of popgirl fame, but that's okay with us. Spears isn't just a singer who's come and gone and is now pathetically trying to get noticed again; she's a pop icon who deserves every shred of attention she receives. She's Britney, bitch. She might not have made as many waves as she would have liked with her 2011 album Femme Fatale, but this time Spears is ready for a full-on war to recapture the hearts of America. And you know what? I think she's ready to win this time.

Not only was her new single "accidentally" leaked (let's be real, everyone needs a little bit of scandal to get noticed) and her epic Vegas residency unofficially announced within days of each other, but she's taken to Instragram to reveal her smokin' bod for her new music video. With moves like these, she's letting us know that she's still here and that she's ready to pounce on the pop queen crown that is rightfully hers. Britney, we're ready for all you can throw our way.

Lorde Of The Teen Pop Stars

BYRON BAY, AUSTRALIA - JULY 28: Lorde performs for fans on day 3 of the 2013 Splendour In The Grass Festival on July 28, 2013 in Byron Bay, Australia. (Photo by Mark Metcalfe/Getty Images)

Currently sitting pretty at No. 3 on the US Hot 100, New Zealand singer-songwriter Lorde appears to have come from nowhere to score one of the most addictive and yet effortlessly cool songs of the summer. With a debut album, Punk Heroine, due for release on September 27, here’s a look at some of the things you need to know about Ella Yelich-O'Connor.

She signed to Universal aged just 13Spotted by an A&R scout following a talent show performance at her Auckland school, Lorde signed to Universal on a development deal aged just 13 and has spent the last three years juggling her school commitments with writing her own material.

She's obsessed with royaltyAs well as naming her breakthrough hit "Royals," Lorde's moniker was also inspired by her love of the aristocracy: “When I was trying to come up with a stage name, I thought ‘Lord' was super rad, but really masculine—ever since I was a little kid, I have been really into royals. So to make Lord more feminine, I just put an ‘e' on the end! Some people think it's religious, but it's not.

She likes but can't relate to Lana Del ReyDespite professing a love for the likes of Drake, Nicki Minaj and Lana Del Rey, Lorde has revealed that "Royals" is actually a reaction to the 'opulence' and 'bullsh*t' that such artists regularly refer to in their music.

She's a superstar in New Zealand
Lorde is already on her way to achieving pop royalty status in her New Zealand homeland. Both "Royals" and "Tennis Court" debuted at No.1 on the country’s Top 40 chart, the former of which has already received the cover version treatment on The X-Factor, while she and co-writer Joel Little have recently been shortlisted for industry award The Silver Scroll.

She's the new Tracy Bonham"Royals" recently topped the Billboard Alternative Songs chart, making her the first female artist to do so since angsty singer-violinist Tracy Bonham back in 1996, the same year Lorde was born.

She has a sick Frank Ocean to thank for her Australian big breakDespite conquering her homeland, she was still an unknown in neighbouring Australia until Frank Ocean pulled out of the Splendour In The Grass festival in July over a career-threatening vocal cord injury, allowing last-minute replacement Lorde to wow the crowds with a typically self-assured set.

She makes Victoria Beckham look overly smileyDon't expect to see her flashing her teeth too often. The permanently sultry musician has admitted that she hates smiling and prefers to spend her life 'looking fierce' in photos.

Nicole Kidman Saves a Nation by Being Beautiful and Rich in 'Grace of Monaco' Trailer

Nicole Kidman becomes royalty in the dazzling trailer for Oliver Dahan's newest film Grace of Monaco, which recounts the glamor and turmoil that encompased the real-life reign of Grace Kelly, Hollywood starlet turned Princess of Monaco. Instead of taking form as a biopic about Kelly's entire life, the film will only focus on the few years during which Kelly helped ease tensions between France and Monaco. This is welcome news because biopics that try to throw a person's entire life on screen usually become terribly unweildly in the process. Think of how bad The Social Network would have been if we had to watch Mark Zuckeburg manipulate his third grade classmates out of their juiceboxes.

Grace of Monaco, Nicole KidmanThe Weinstein Company
The trailer is beautifully shot and exudes a certain elegance. There is a essence of royalty that lingers in every scene as we see Kidman's Grace traipse down long hallways or attend fancy dinners, bathed in rich yellow light. Even though the film boasts an impressive cast, featuring actors like Frank Langella, Parker Posey, Tim Roth, Derek Jacobi and Milo Ventimiglia, this short teaser only focuses on Kidman with a voiceover promising that the world will never forget who Grace Kelly is and what she has done. We hope Kidman's newest film is good, because we'd all like to forget Austrailia ever happened.

Death Of A Borough Part Two: Lena Dunham Is Shooting In Brooklyn Again

NEW YORK, NY - APRIL 27: Lena Dunham filming on location for "Girls" on April 27, 2013 in New York City. (Photo by Aby Baker/Getty Images)

It’s just so confusing. I want everyone to know how kick-ass my borough is, I really do. Brooklyn is and always has been the greatest. But I want it to be worshiped from afar.
As Girls gears up to shoot again, it reminds me of how cool and cringe-worthy it all is, Brooklyn being flung onto the world map. Sure, Dunham has thrown her weight behind a fundraiser for the Lutheran Medical Center, far from the hipster hinterland. But she also reportedly checked out $4 million digs in Williamsburg. I repeat, 4 million bucks, in Williamsburg.
So thanks Girls, for killing Café Grumpy. Go for it. It's alway been way too precious for me, and I actually hate their coffee. But the Girls bus tour? Better wear a helmet if you book a ticket. I'll be the one throwing rocks at it.

Say It Ain't So-okie: 5 ‘True Blood’ Moments To Relive Before The Final Season

HBO might have sentenced vampire drama True Blood to the true death after next season, the show’s seventh, but we’ll always have the memories. True Blood helped redefine supernatural shows, making it acceptable to mix standard drama elements with high camp.

True Blood Season 6, Episode 8
So let’s see the fangers out in style by remembering some of the show’s greatest and weirdest moments:
Sookie and Bill Kiss For The First Time
This is where it all started, when telepathic waitress Sookie Stackhouse met southern gentleman vampire Bill Compton. Their chemistry was hard to deny, even for actors Stephen Moyer and Anna Paquin, who ended up a real-life couple.
Eric Goes Up In Flames
Eric may be hot but he’s never been this hot before. As last season of True Blood drew to a close we saw a very, very naked Eric sunbathing. But we could only enjoy the view for a moment, as suddenly our favorite Viking vampire caught flame.
Godric Meets The Sun
Eric’s vampire maker Godric was a centuries old vampire ready to die. The scene where he decided to meet the sun, with Sookie standing by watching, was one of the show’s most emotional and spectacular.
Franklin Can Text Really Fast
Sookie’s best friend Tara has had some of the worst luck on the show, and that’s really saying something for a cast of characters this disaster-prone. When unhinged vampire Franklin falls for Tara, he takes her hostage and tries to impress her by showing off his superior texting skills.
Russell Edgington Makes News
One of the greatest True Blood characters was definitely drama queen vampire Russell Edgington, played with great flare by Denis O’Hare. After Eric kills his lover Talbot, Russell makes a splashy entrance on live TV by eviscerating a news anchor. “Now time for the weather. Tiffany!”

'Blurred Lines' Model Emily Ratajkowski Is Having an Affair with Ben Affleck... in 'Gone Girl'

Playboy and Universal Pictures present an exclusive event for 'Kick-Ass 2' during Comic-Con International 2013 in San Diego, California on July 19, 2013.<P>Pictured: Emily Ratajkowski<P><B>Ref: SPL583259 230713 </B><BR/>Picture by: Andrea Howlett / Splash News<BR/></P><P><B>Splash News and Pictures</B><BR/>Los Angeles: 310-821-2666<BR/>New York: 212-619-2666<BR/>London: 870-934-2666<BR/>photodesk@splashnews.com<BR/></P>Andrea Howlett / Splash News

Before we begin, I want to state for the record that I am one of the few humans — and quite possibly the only woman between the ages of 18 and 34 — who hated Gillian Flynn's mystery thriller Gone Girl. While the novel may have been one of a small number to achieve both critical acclaim and bestseller status, I would have stopped reading if not for a particularly punishing book club. That being said, the novel's saving grace for me was that I thought it might just make a fun movie. But now, as the cast for the actual movie adaptation of this bonkers husband/wife murder plot continues to grow, I'm becoming skeptical once again.
First came Ben Affleck for the lead role of Nick Dunne — a choice I found odd mostly because Affleck is so inherently likable while Nick is supposed to be a sleazy a**hole. Plus, he seemed a little old for the role. Then came Rosamund Pike for Nick's sweet-or-deranged-depending-on-the-chapter wife Amy —  a choice I was willing to go with because I like Pike so much (seriously, is there a woman more beautiful?). And now we have 21-year-old Emily Ratajkowski, the stunning model who became a household name this summer after starring in Robin Thicke's notorious "Blurred Lines" music video, making her acting debut as Andie, Nick's mistress, The Wrap reports.
Add to that motley crew Tyler Perry (as Nick's defense attorney) and Neil Patrick Harris (as a former beau of Amy's who... nevermind, I won't spoil it for you) and you've got the most whackadoo combination of actors we've seen this side of The Holiday.
David Fincher is at the helm of this ship to crazytown, so let's hope he can steer it closer to wildly eccentric than bats**t.

Unexpected Music Star Reinventions

Katy PerryWenn; Getty

In order to keep up with the ever-fickle public, celebrities are constantly reinventing their images to stay relevant. Whether it’s David Bowie or Beyoncé taking on alter egos (Ziggy Stardust and Sasha Fierce, respectively), or Madonna and Gwen Stefani changing their entire persona every few years, seeing the changes celebs in the music world make is always interesting.
Some changes, however, come completely out of left field and leave us scratching our heads, wondering how the star could even be getting away with that. Here’s a rundown of 13 of the most interesting and unexpected 180s that stars have made
Dr. DreDr. Dre may be one of the grandaddies of gangsta rap, but he was originally a DJ for electro hip hop group World Class Wreckin’ Cru. The group wore the shiniest, glossiest clothes that would’ve put Marc Bolan to shame, and had the hottest ('80s) dance moves. After working the club circuit for a while, the group found success and are now considered to be pioneers of rap. Dre went on to join NWA, dropping the glitziness of the Cru for a more “gangsta” look, and eventually defined himself as a hip-hop producer with the golden touch.
Janet Jackson She was Penny on Good Times and Charlene on Diff’rent Strokes before turning into Miss Jackson (if you’re nasty). But it was Janet Jackson’s Herb Ritts-directed video for “Love Will Never Do (Without You)” that let the world know that Miss Jackson was officially Ms. Jackson. The shy but feisty girl from Control and Rhythm Nation 1814 that everyone knew and loved had officially reached womanhood. Instead of taking the trashy route to show the public she’d grown up (ahem, Miley), Jackson instead decided to show just the right amount of midriff in the video, look drop-dead gorgeous, and canoodle with the gorgeous hunk of man that is Antonio Sabato, Jr. Now that’s how you do it.
Beastie Boys
Fun fact: the Beastie Boys’ roots are in hardcore punk rock. The group managed to play some sick shows, supporting legendary punk acts like the Misfits, Dead Kennedys, Reagan Youth, and Bad Brains during the '80s. Beastie Boys stumbled into hip-hop by accident – their first hip-hop track, “Cooky Puss,” was based on a prank call the group had made to a Carvel Ice Cream store in 1983, but ended up becoming a massive hit in the NYC underground hip-hop scene. The group began to record rock-based rap shortly after, and the rest is history.
LL Cool J LL Cool J was known for his hard-hitting raps and for having a hardcore mama who encouraged knocking people out. After appearing as a rapper in 1985’s Krush Grove, though, LL got a taste for acting and began to pursue more roles, appearing in films such as Wildcats and Toys before landing his own sitcom, In the House. Since then, LL has appeared in a slew of films and television shows, and currently stars on NCIS: Los Angeles. Impressively, the rapper has continued to consistently release albums since 1985 in between steadily landing movie and television roles. Clearly, it’s more than just the ladies who love cool James.
Alanis Morissette
Essentially Canada’s answer to Tiffany, Alanis Morissette was a Canadian pop star before venturing over to the dark side of alternative rock. Morissette went from singing and dancing to bubblegum pop ditties to tearing Uncle Joey a new one on the record-breaking Jagged Little Pill. Sixteen Junos and seven Grammys later, Morissette is still going strong, having released her eighth studio album just last year.
Mark Wahlberg
Mark Wahlberg has had a few surprising reinventions. First, he was a delinquent, teenage coke fiend who permanently blinded a Vietnamese man just for being Vietnamese. Then, he got together a Funky Bunch and became Marky Mark, ordering people everywhere to feel the good vibrations. His most drastic turn, however, was when he entered the acting world and became a critically acclaimed actor, even getting nominated for a Golden Globe and Academy Award for Best Supporting actor in 2006’s The Departed.
Black Eyed PeasOriginally starting out as a socially-conscious rap group from L.A., the Black Eyed Peas completely changed up their style in 2002 with the addition of pop singer Fergie. The group quickly decided that wondering where all the love in the world has gone to was not as important as humps and lovely lady lumps, and the party-starting, boom-boom-pow-ing Black Eyed Peas was born shortly thereafter.
Victoria Beckham
The fact that we even call Victoria Beckham by her name instead of “Posh Spice” is enough proof that her reinvention was extremely successful. Beckham was originally the “meh” Spice of the Spice Girls, barely ever singing because she was too busy posing and pouting for the cameras. When the group broke up, it seemed highly unlikely that out of all the Spices, Posh would be the one to carve out a name for herself, but that’s exactly what she did. Beckham has made a name for herself in the fashion world and has a lucrative and critically acclaimed fashion line.
Skrillex
Sonny Moore may sound like the name of a tough-talkin’, chain-smokin’ country star, but it’s actually the birth name of one of the world’s best-selling dubstep DJs. After doing a 3 year stint as the guitarist in an emo band called From First to Last, Moore released a few one-off songs before officially reinventing himself in 2010 with My Name Is Skrillex. The album took Skrillex in a completely different direction – from emo to dubstep – and almost overnight, Skrillex was opening for deadmau5 and winning Grammys left and right. Plus, The Skrillex has become a legitimate name for his oft-copied hairstyle, so in a weird way, the dude is also a fashion icon.
Drake
For a lot of people, Drake will always be Wheelchair Jimmy from Degrassi: The Next Generation. The Canadian rapper originally started out as Aubrey Graham, playing basketball player James Brooks on the successful teen soap. In 2006, however, Drake released his first mixtape and started to garner buzz throughout the hip hop world. Famous before he was even signed to a label, Drake eventually signed with Lil Wayne’s Young Money Entertainment and has been rapping and feuding his way to the top of the hip hop charts ever since.
Rihanna
Rihanna is known for constantly changing up her looks, but her initial reinvention was the one that caught us by surprise the most. After constantly being touted by the music industry as the next Beyoncé, the fresh-faced Barbadian ensured that the whole world knew that she was totally over being sweet and poppy by chopping off her hair and calling her third album Good Girl Gone Bad. In case anyone was still confused, she ditched the hip huggers and bangles for hot pants and whips, and started to sing songs about S&M. Anyone still wondering where the good girl went?
Courtney Love Courtney Love has gone through a few major transformations in her life, but her most unexpected was when she played Larry Flynt’s wife, Althea, in 1996’s The People vs. Larry Flynt. Not only did she garner tons of critical acclaim and receive a Golden Globe nomination for her role, but she showed up to the the 1997 Oscars looking like a completely different person, dropping her trademark messy, punk garb for a white gown and polished makeup. Gone were the days of flashing crowds and crashing Madonna interviews – a new Courtney Love had been born. (It didn’t last very long, but that’s a different story.)
Katy Perry
Katy Perry grew up in a religious home with Pentecostal pastors as parents, so it wasn’t too surprising when she forayed into the music world as a Christian rock singer. What was surprising, though, was when she threw her old image out the window and instead kissed a girl and liked it so much that she had to sing a song about it. The once wholesome, blonde-haired-blue-eyed singer had turned into a raven-haired, ruby-lipped femme fatale-ish entertainer who dresses like Rainbow Brite and shoots whipped cream out of her boobs.

'The Walking Dead' Gets a New Companion Series

Walkers - The Walking Dead_Season 3, Episode 16_"Welcome to the Tombs" - Photo Credit: Gene Page/AMC

Ready for even more zombies? Oh... no? Well, too bad.
AMC, after probably realizing that no one is going to sit through Low Winter Sun no matter how many Breaking Bad sneak peeks you cram inside each episode, has decided to make a new show by doing what has worked best for them over the few years, creating original ideas for engaging television shows forcing more zombies on us.
Variety reports that the network is developing a new companion series based off of their monster hit The Walking Dead. The new series will come from Robert Kirkman, original creator of The Walking Dead comics, and executive producers Gale Anne Hurd and Dave Alpert. The show would take place in the same universe as The Walking Dead, but would feature an all-new cast of characters.
In a statement about the new companion series, Kirkman said, "After 10 years of writing the comic book series and being so close to the debut of our fourth, and in my opinion, best season of the TV series, I couldn't be more thrilled about getting the chance to create a new corner of The Walking Dead universe. The opportunity to make a show that isn’t tethered by the events of the comic book, and is truly a blank page, has set my creativity racing."
AMC seems to be looking towards old successes for its newest properties. Along with this new Walking Dead spin-off, the network is also developing a series based on Breaking Bad. The Breaking Bad spin-off would feature the adventures of sleazy bus bench lawyer Saul Goodman before he meets Walter White. While the Saul Goodman spin-off idea seems to have come from a place of genuine creativity and desire to make something artful, the announcement of this Walking Dead companion piece feels like nothing short of a ratings grab. AMC president Charlie Collier even alludes to that fact in a recent release, saying, "Building on the success of the most popular show on television for adults 18-49 is literally a no-brainer."
AMC originally made it's prestigious name in the televison drama market by creating the kinds of programs that have challenged the way we precieve television, and the types of stories that the medium can depict. Shows like Breaking Bad, Mad Men, and even The Walking Dead were daring moves that paid off because they presented viewers with something different and exciting. We hope that this new series can deliver the same crowd-pleasing blood splatter that the original show is known for, but this is certainly television production at its most cold and clinical.

‘Girls,’ The Brooklyn Museum Episode

NEW YORK, NY - NOVEMBER 12: Filmmaker and actress Lena Dunham attends the 22nd annual Glamour Women of the Year Awards at Carnegie Hall on November 12, 2012 in New York City. (Photo by Dimitrios Kambouris/WireImage for Glamour Magazine)

Identity is, well, personal. So who are we to say what’s feminist or post-feminist?
The Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art at The Brooklyn Museum is going on record on this account by choosing to honor post-feminist firebrand Lena Dunham, who has raised hackles in some critical circles for her bald depictions of 21st Century womankind. She'll be feted at their 11th annual Women in the Arts Luncheon, which in the past has honored groundbreaking artists like Kara Walker, Yoko Ono and Cindy Sherman.
While you mull that one over, it might help to know that the other honoree is the pioneering artist Laurie Simmons, whose work is steeped in gender critique and is part of the feminist canon.
Did we forget to say she's also Lena Dunham's mother? It's the first time event has paid tribute to a mother and daughter. It would be reductive to refer to this as Take Your Daughter to Work Day at the Museum, and decidedly un-feminist. Still, it is somewhat tempting...

'Bones' and the Rise of Awesomely Awkward Product Placement

Bones

Fans of the TV show Bones, which returns tonight at at 8 PM ET on Fox, have a love-hate relationship with one of the series' oddest little quirks: approximately four times per season, an episode will stop dead for about 60 seconds while the characters talk enthusiastically about some cool feature or another on the Toyota they're riding in. While some viewers find the in-show ads obnoxiously intrusive, others (including myself), actually appreciate how obnoxiously intrusive they are: by making the ad sections as blatant as possible, the show's producers are implicitly acknowledging how silly the practice is. You can tell that they're uncomfortable with the practice, though: clips of the Toyota scenes that show up on YouTube invariably get pulled almost immediately on copyright infringement claims.
Since the rise of the DVR means many of us hardly ever see commercials anymore, TV shows have gone ever further into this kind of integrated product placement. It's not just about the giant red and white Coca-Cola glasses in front of the American Idol judges anymore, or even things like that recent Project: Runway episode that was a barely-veiled 90-minute commercial for Yoplait's new Greek frozen yogurt. Brands are increasingly making their way into the scripted dramas and sitcoms.
Like Bones, Cougar Town has had season-long relationships with sponsors: for its second season, the critically-acclaimed sitcom's characters quite often found themselves lounging on the patio outside an ostentatiously prominent Subway restaurant. This culminated in a scene between Travis (Dan Byrd) and Laurie (Busy Philipps) in which the teen proclaimed his love for Subway's huge sandwiches and cheap prices. (And yes, that's Community's Danny Pudi, in character as Abed, behind them: this was the punchline of a season-long running gag on the second season of Community.)

After moving to TBS for its fourth season, Cougar Town started a new relationship with Target. Not only did series co-stars Ian Gomez and Josh Hopkins do an in-character commercial for the retailer that aired during every episode, an entire episode featured a subplot in which the perpetually broke Bobby (Brian Van Holt) treats a day inside a 24-hour Target as a miniature spa vacation. Modern Family had already gone to the red-and-white well, setting one storyline of a Christmas episode in a Target where mother and daughter duo Claire (Julie Bowen) and Hayley (Sarah Hyland) were attempting to finish all of the family's holiday shopping in 45 minutes.
The practice has become so widespread that the more self-aware shows have begun mocking themselves for it, such as a memorable break in an episode of 30 Rock where an ad for Snapple shows up in the midst of Liz Lemon (Tina Fey) complaining about the practice of integrated product placement in scripted TV. Others are more relaxed about the concept. On Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, Fey's erstwhile "Weekend Update" co-anchor has revived the practice of occasionally doing live ads at the beginning of his show's commercial breaks. And why not? After all, Johnny Carson did the exact same thing on The Tonight Show 50 years ago. Everything old is new again.

'The Hunger Games: Mockingjay' Casts 'American Horror Story' Star Lily Rabe

With the recent news that Julianne Moore will play President Alma Coin  in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, it didn't look like the cast could handle one more star in its line-up, but Lily Rabe has managed to nab a place in Panem. According to Variety, Rabe, known for her devilish roles in American Horror Story, will swiftly move from the small screen to the big screen for her role as Commander Lyme, a former District 2 victor of the Hunger Games and leader of the Rebellion in District 13.
While Commander Lyme might not be as big of a character as President Coin, Rabe's experience in American Horror Story playing women who know what they want — and who aren't afraid to kill for it — will afford her no problems bringing Lyme to life. Rabe will join the star-studded cast that includes the likes of Moore, Stanley Tucci, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Woody Harrelson, and of course the star of the franchise, Jennifer Lawrence.
While fans will have to wait untul Nov. 21, 2014 to see Rabe in The  Hunger Games: Mockingjay: Part 1, they can see her in American Horry Story: Coven, the third installment of the series, which premiers on Oct. 9 on FX.

Look Mum, Another Remake! Hollywood's Case of Anglophilia

The IT Crowd

The relationship between American and British entertainment has always been a symbiotic one. We get tightly-written drama, edgy comedies and addictive game shows — while they get to enjoy re-runs of Frasier and Dog the Bounty Hunter, it's a win-win all around.
America's track record for sourcing original content from our British brethren is a lengthy one, going back to sitcoms such as Three's Company, Sanford and Son to the new modern classics of The Office and Veep. But it seems our thirst for Anglo-entertainment has reached a fever pitch, as shows such as Broadchurch are being broadcasted to our shores via BBC America and put into development for an American adaptation simultaneously. The crime drama starring the most famous former Doctor Who, David Tennat, wowed critics this summer and its Americanized version is set to air on FOX next year. Broadchurch is just one of the many shows that has caught the attention of the big networks and cable. Adapted series are equally known for their spectacular successes (i.e American Idol) as there are for their miserable flops (see: Coupling, Life on MarsSkins, The IT Crowd — shall we go on?) The show Episodes even based their whole premise on a BAFTA-award winning series having to dumb down for an American audience. So what is it about UK entertainment that renders it catnip to television execs?

The answer lies both in cultural identity and the unique production system in which British entertainment thrives, that enables their shows to be highly entertaining but prickly to translate to an American audience.  When watching British entertainment or even a remake, there is a sense of foreignness and familiarity that peaks our interest and makes it palatable to our viewers. Much has been said about the British broadcasting schedule and the creative environment it creates. If you only have six or seven episodes per season to tell a story, rather than 22 episodes and multiple seasons, you're not going to be stuck with much filler. Americans lack the patience for such a schedule; we need our fresh fall shows and our syndicated fluff. For U.S. television shows to truly be profitable, they need to hit the 100-episode watermark — and that usually comes with sacrifices along the way. Viewers almost had a mental breakdown when Mad Men went on hiatus for 17 months.
Britain serves as an incubator for ideas. They will never compete with the US in terms of physical output, but they compete on their home turf in terms of originality, and critical acclaim. We all know television can be formulaic, so it makes sense for networks to see the success of British game shows, reality programs and lifestyle shows (think Bravo) and try to translate them to an American audience to replicate the success. This phenomenon known as "McTelevision," is media studies 101.
If American producers want to keep playing by the British playbook, they have to come up with some new maneuvers. The only reason The Office survived is because it found its own footing. These shows are already gaining a loyal fan base on BBC America, Netflix and Hulu, so sticking to the same script and shots will only alienate old fans and new. While Breaking Bad and other off-center dramas prove Americans can now stomach the unlovable and sometimes despicable protagonist that Brits adore, will audiences still put up with their antics after multiple seasons of 22 episodes? If done right — yes. But for all of our sakes, stick to cable.

What is it about certain stars that has girls cooing at the TV in delight, while their boyfriends invent mutant junk foods in their heads (“KFC pizza… Cinnabon White Russians… Man, I should really be writing these down…”)?
While a luminous Cate Blanchett, sassy SJP, or gamine Anne Hathaway should surely appeal to even the blind Inuit, the genders stand divided on these beauties. While gay men and fashionable women swoon for Tilda Swinton, her ginger eyelashes hold little charm for the average dude. While a generation of women admired Carrie Bradshaw’s fearless approach to challenging hem lengths, Maxim voted Sarah Jessica Parker the ‘Unsexiest Woman in the World’. And, even though burlesque stripper Dita Von Teese should get everyone hot under the collar, it says a lot that the last guy who really dated her was called Marilyn.
So which other polarizing goddesses make the list of women who are only hot to other women? Join us as we negotiate the ultimate hot-or-not list.

'Breaking Bad' Recap (Season 5 Episode 14): Let's All Kidnap Baby Holly!

Oh how far Walt has come. Or rather, how much he has lost. Somehow the standard Breaking Bad description of him as a Mr. Chips who becomes Scarface seems woefully inadequate at this point. The devastation he has unleashed is unfathomable: Hank and Gomez are dead, Jesse’s being tortured and likely will be killed, Walt Jr.’s innocence has been shattered, and he’s lost his family…probably forever. There’s no going back now. And it all makes us wonder when he reached the point of no return, when he, like Macbeth, waded so far into a river of blood that he could only emerge by getting drenched in it. “Ozymandias” was one of the most harrowing, profoundly disturbing hours of television I’ve ever seen, in part because all of the decisions that led to its orgy of violence were made so very long ago.
“Ozymandias” began with a flashback to Walt’s first cook at To’hajilee, a little over a year earlier. With hair and a mustache, and no pants of course, he really had to rehearse his excuse to Skyler for why he’d be late — some cockamamie story about car wash owner Bogdan wanting him to go over receipts. Lying didn’t come as easy then. And it seemed as if at this point Walt really was focused on his family, agreeing to pick up a couple pizzas for dinner and thinking about Holly as a potential name for the baby. Jesse was still the bad one, the junkie burnout who might actually have lit up inside the meth lab if it weren’t for Walt’s warning. They’ve since traveled on completely opposite paths, which somehow still led both of them back to To’hajilee, where it all started.
Back in the present, the shootout came to a quick end. Walt’s Neo-Nazi allies had killed Gomez and cornered Hank, despite Walt’s frantic cries to call them off. He made a last-minute gamble at redemption: he’d give Jack his $80 million in exchange for Hank’s life. But Hank wouldn’t beg for his life, and he didn’t want Walt to either: “You’re the smartest man I’ve ever known, and yet you’re too stupid to know he made up his mind 10 minutes ago.”
Jack put a bullet in Hank’s brain.
Walt knew it was over. His family was broken. There was no going back. Everything he had ostensibly done all this for was lost. He lay on the New Mexico sand in agony as Jack and his gang took his money anyway. All except for one barrel that they left for him with about $10-15 million in it, because these Nazis have a code, I guess. But Walt wasn’t finished. “Pinkman,” he said to Jack. “Pinkman.” They still hadn’t killed Jesse, and Walt knew exactly where he was: hiding under a car. They grabbed him and promised to pop a cap in his ass after they tortured him to find out exactly what he’d told the Feds. Walt began the torture on his own, though. He finally told Jesse the truth: he let Jane die. He watched her choke on her own vomit, when he could have saved her. That was probably the moment of no return for Walt, really. Jesse was speechless. There was no time for a frantically shouted “bitch” or anything — he’s beyond words at this point.
Walt left, but his Chrysler ran out of gas, so he rolled his barrel of money to a Native American’s shed and offered him a wad of cash to buy his ancient pick-up truck. Marie went to the car wash to tell Skyler what had happened: Hank had arrested Walt. It was over. This Shakespearean scenario — characters acting on information that’s horribly out of date — led to the moment the whole series has been building toward: Walt Jr. finding out his father is a murderous drug lord. Marie demanded that Skyler tell her son the truth, rather than have him hear about it from men in uniform. So they sat him down and told him everything. He recognized right off the bat that his mother is a liar. Either she was lying to him before or she’s lying to him now. No matter what, she deceived him, covered for Walt’s crimes, and probably bears some responsibility for them too. Or as Walt Jr. put it, “If all this is true and you knew about it, then you’re as bad as him.”
Skyler and Walt Jr. went back to their house and saw the mysterious, dented pick-up truck in their driveway: never a good sign. Walt was there, packing super fast to get out of Dodge. But his son wanted answers. Walt wouldn’t give them to him, instead saying that they need to get out of there and go somewhere where they can start a new life together. Totally delusional. Skyler realized what all this must mean for Hank. He must be dead. Walt said he tried to save him, but that meant nothing. Skyler could either grab the phone or the knife, and she chose the knife. She cut his hand, but Walt couldn’t leave it there. He struggled with her for the knife, until Walt Jr. finally intervened and helped his mom. He picked up the phone, called the police, and said that his dad pulled a knife on his mom. Somehow, I think he’ll want to be called Flynn exclusively after this.
Walt took Baby Holly and left. Because apparently that’s what people do when they want to hurt Skyler: take the baby! Or maybe that Internet theory about Walt assuming the traits of his victims wasn’t fully accurate. Maybe he also absorbs the traits of his victims’ spouses as well.
The police arrived at Casa White, and while they were there, Walt called Skyler and gave an incredible rant. It was a confession, yes, but like his previous confession that implicated Hank it altered the truth. This time, though, it was to take the blame entirely on himself and leave no room for Skyler to be implicated — since he obviously knew the police would be listening in. His rage toward Skyler was the only thing really truthful in what he was saying. He was ranting stuff like “I did all of this for you, and you never listened to me, I had to do it all alone!” And he took Baby Holly for good measure to just to emphasize to the cops the complete and total rift between him and his wife that means she was never his partner in crime. Once his goal had been achieved, he deposited Holly at a fire station and took off. He would do what Jesse refused to do: get a new life courtesy of Jim Beaver and head to the “Granite State,” the title of next week’s episode — New Hampshire.
Was that a harrowing hour of television or what?

Kate Moss On Sale At Christie's — A Waif at Auction

Kate Moss attends a photocall for the 'A celebration of Kate Moss' auction at Christie's Where: London, United Kingdom When: 04 Sep 2013 Credit: SIPA/WENN.com **Only available for publication in Germany. Not available for publication in the rest of the world.**

When Christie's London decided to stage its auction of photographs from the collection of Gert Elfering, "A Celebration of Kate Moss," Moss herself was reportedly nonplussed. Auction goers, a little less so. Christie's last set of offerings from Elfering brought $4,273,200. Of course it included a 1968 Richard Avedon of a previous Super Lauren Hutton that fetched $127,000.
There was an Irving Penn in the Moss sale with an estimate topping out at $109,970, which she probably makes for a day's work. So who knows? She is a part of fashion history, although it’s a chapter some are still disturbed by.
And maybe she actually is a work of art. Still what does it mean when a preeminent auction house thinks the subject of a photograph holds marquee value over the photograph itself? Heroin Chic has finally arrived?

BOLLYWOOD NEWS UPDATES

My chemistry with Deepika highlight of 'Ramleela': Ranveer

Mumbai: Actor Ranveer Singh, who has been in the news for his so-called romance link-ups with Deepika Padukone, says their chemistry in ‘Ram Leela’ is a mainstay of the story.

"We were destined to be cast opposite each other. It`s a chemistry between Romeo and Juliet. I hope it works as our chemistry is the driving force of the story," Ranveer told reporters.

But when he was asked about romance rumours with Deepika, he chose to keep mum.

Directed and produced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, ‘Ramleela’ is set to come out Nov 29.

Bhansali has picturised a lip-lock scene on Deepika and Ranveer.

When asked about it, the actress said: "I find it amusing when people ask me about lip-lock scenes. As an actor there is no difference between any scene. But when you are working with Sanjay sir, he makes even the simplest scene most difficult. He tweaks the scene in his mind."

Dancing with Shahid difficult: Ileana D'Cruz

Mumbai: Actress Ileana D`Cruz, who is sharing screen-space with Shahid Kapoor in ‘Phata Poster Nikla Hero’, finds it difficult to match steps with the actor.

"Dancing with Shahid is very difficult. I used to get so nervous. I think, Shahid is very quick while dancing. It was difficult to match steps with him," Ileana told reporters in a group interview.

Shahid is considered as one of the best male dancers in Bollywood and the two will be seen together for the first time in Rajkumar Santoshi`s film that is set to release Friday.

The actress, who is a known name in South industry, debuted in Bollywood with ‘Barfi’ and says that unlike in South, one needs to be fit in Bollywood.

"There is some difference (between Bollywood and southern films) but it also depends from director to director. I have to be fit here unlike in South. I am very conscious about my looks. In South, actresses need to be a bit healthy but here I will have to be fit," she said.

Wish I’d changed end of 'Kal Ho Naa Ho': Karan Johar

New Delhi: Filmmaker Karan Johar’s ‘Kal Ho Naa Ho’ left many teary-eyed, thanks to the sad conclusion of the 2003 film. Now when he watches superstar Shah Rukh Khan dying on the hospital bed, Karan wishes the film ended in a different way.

The 41-year-old, who made his directorial debut with ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ in 1998, admits that he made mistakes and conclusion of ‘Kal..’ was one of them.

"Every film is a new mistake. When I see `Kuch..`, now I feel what a ridiculous story, when I see `Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham`, I think it is 35 minutes too long, `Kal..`, I wish I had changed the end..., `Student of the Year`, I wish it had more of emotional intensity. So, every film is a
new mistake,” Karan told reporters post press show of ‘The Lunchbox’ here.

The son of late producer Yash Johar said that his father had a major role in changing the conclusion of ‘Kal Ho Naa Ho’ that also stars Saif Ali Khan and Preity Zinta.

"It was my father’s decision to show him (Shah Rukh) lying on the hospital bed. I was ending it far more differently, but he said `Agar bada star ho toh usko marte huye dekhna chahiye, audience ko rona hai`, (if it’s a big star, we should show him dying as the audience wants to cry),” said Karan, who will direct another film next year.

Selena Gomez, George Shelly cosy up

Lisbon: Singer Selena Gomez reportedly spent some intimate time with Union J band member George Shelly.

Gomez performed with Union J members in Portugal and later partied in her room.

"She invited all the Union J boys and some other members of her entourage to her room and they had a great time drinking and dancing," thesun.co.uk quoted a source as saying.

"Selena and George were all over each other and things got very heated. Everyone else left the room at 2a.m., so they were able to spend the night together," the source added.

George is said to have missed his flight to London the next day. But his band members Josh Cuthbert, Jaymi Hensley and JJ Hamlbett were not upset with him.

Gulshan Devaiah to play antagonist in 'Ramleela'

New Delhi: Actor Gulshan Devaiah, who played negative roles in films like ‘Shaitan’ and ‘Hate Story’, will once again play the role of antagonist in Sanjay Leela Bhansali`s ‘Ramleela’.

Gulshan essays the character of ‘Bhavani` in the movie that also features Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh in lead roles.

"Bhavani is a prominent member of the Jadeja clan who are of Chandrivanshi Rajput descent living in modern day Kutch Gujarat. The exact attributes of the character and his contribution to the plot is something I cannot divulge in but let`s just say he has enough shades of grey and is nothing like I have done this far in my career," the actor said in a statement.

He is also excited about working with Bhansali and added: "I am very excited to be a part of the film as I have grown up watching Sanjay Leela Bhansali`s films and I am overwhelmed by the greatness of the man."

The movie is slated to release Nov 15.

Sushant Singh Rajput to play lead in Shekhar Kapur's 'Paani'

New Delhi: It seems Sushant Singh Rajput is on a roll! He has been roped in to play the male lead in Shekhar Kapur`s directorial venture ‘Paani’.

It is said that after his realistic performance in ‘Shuddh Desi Romance’, both Kapur and producer Aditya Chopra finalised him for the lead.

“Sushant is one of the most inspiring young actors to emerge out of India. It`s going to be an exciting director-actor collaboration with him on `Paani`,” Kapur said in a statement.

To be made under the Yash Raj Films banner, the film is based in a future world where wars over water have broken out. The film`s cast will have both Indian and western actors.

A young leading actress from the West will join Sushant, who started movie career with ‘Kai Po Che!’

‘Paani’ goes on floor mid-2014.
